How to Replace an audi advance key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission, Audi Car Keys above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It's a bit tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for Audi A3 Replacement Key evidence of coolant or audi a1 car Key oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine with no sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.
Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good news is that they are very affordable and easy to find, especially if you're looking at the Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission of your audi a3 key because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.
The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49.
